- Introduction
-
Chemical Engineering is a discipline that interprets natural phenomena based on chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics and applies such interpretations to relevant industries in order to contribute to society’s advancement. Related industries have traditionally been the refinery, petrochemical, and fine chemical industries but are now expanding to include bio/pharmaceuticals, new materials, semiconductors, displays, environment, and clean energy. The role of chemical engineering experts will grow in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, leading the response to universal problems (e.g. climate change) and fine dust reduction, preparation for a hydrogen-based society, development of new materials, and advancement of biotechnology. After graduation, students are hired by the refinery, petrochemical, bio/polymer, medicine, materials, and semiconductor-related industries; plant design, food, cosmetics, and new energy-related industries; or as technicians, researchers, technical salespeople, public servants specializing in chemical engineering, or patent attorneys. They can also choose to be self-employed.
